The standalone converters are typically deployed in locations where only one or two conversions are needed whereas the chassis-only models are ideal for large hubs and server rooms, or at IDF locations where multiple fiber links are converted to UTP telephone wiring.

However, it has a disadvantage that when a network issue occurs, accessing the converter to find the problem is impossible. The chassis-based model is designed to overcome this. It features a possibility for an SNMP card that shows statistics and the overall health of the converter in the chassis. This is helpful when you have multiple chassis filled with ethernet media converters such as in a large data center.
