What is the difference between male and female connectors?

A male connector is commonly referred to as a plug and has a solid pin for a center conductor. A female connector is commonly referred to as a jack and has a center conductor with a hole in it to accept the male pin.

There are special coax connectors called reverse polarity connectors where the male connector is fitted with female center contact and insulator, and the female side is fitted with male center contact and insulator.

The primary purpose of employing reverse polarity connectors is to safeguard against incorrect connections, such as attempting to link a male connector to another male connector or a female connector to another female connector. Such mismatches can lead to connector damage and signal deterioration at the interface.
